The Governor of Ebonyi State, Now Know as Engr. David Umahi, has revoked some of the traffic light contracts awarded by former governor of the state, Martins Elechi, “as a result of their high cost”.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the first phase of the street-lighting project on Wednesday, the governor also said he would further verify some of the contracts he inherited from the past administration.

Mr. Umahi warned that contractors of streetlight project who are unwilling to cooperate with government would have their contracts revoked.

The governor however resolved to spend over N1 billion in the provision of streetlights in the state capital, Abakaliki.

Mr. Umahi explained that the procurement of five power generators for the first phase of the project was to ensure that there would be light every night at the section where the streetlights were installed.

The governor restated his determination to reconstruct over 200 kilometers of urban roads, provide water and sanitation facilities in the state capital.

Mr. Umahi stated that supervisors would be appointed to handle the fuelling and maintenance of the lighting facilities, adding that armed security men would also be deployed to protect the installations against vandalism.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Power, Emmanuel Uguru, stated that “the street lighting of the state capital would enhance the social status, economic status and the security of the city.

He assured that work on other street light projects in all the dualized roads within the state capital would soon be completed.
